Oja notes that in October this year producer prices for food, both here and in the European Union, were on average about a third higher than in 2019, i.e. before the coronavirus. “In the European Union, on average, food prices in shops increased about as much as producer prices over the same period, but in our country they increased almost 10% more, or 43%,” writes Oja.

He adds that the effects of tax changes are excluded from these comparisons, so it cannot be said that lower price increases in other countries are due to more favorable tax rates, etc.

Oja points out that the sales turnover of large grocery stores (non-specialized stores with a predominance of food products) in the third quarter of this year was 35% higher than in the same period in 2019. However, the increase in profits in the same period it was 84%. “If you look at the 9 months of this year and compare them to 2019 before the corona virus, sales increased by 36%, while profits increased by up to 166%,” he notes.
