Four Finns were caught in Otepää for using fluorine grease

The Finns were disqualified on Saturday, when the men’s and women’s 20 km were held in Otepää. Fluoride was found under the skis of men Lauri Lepistöl and Olli-Pekka Laitila and women Rebecca Immonen and Anni Kaipainen.

According to the coach of the Finnish team Jussi Piirainen, an important role in the omission was played by the fact that in Finnish national competitions, which are not under the auspices of the FIS, the use of fluorine-containing lubricants is still allowed.

“Finland uses fluoride grease, but skis must be fluoride-free in international competitions. The athletes’ skis were cleaned a bit carelessly from previous competitions,” Piirainen said.

According to the coach, the FIS tightened the limit values for fluoride at the beginning of the year and earlier the athletes would have passed the control with these skis. “We could have done better. Before the fight the indicators were still normal, but because the fluoride-free fat had partially worn off during the race, fluoride was later found under the mouth,” Piirainen said.
