At a lecture on February 15th at 7 p.m. in the city museum, the historians Johannes Seidl and Bruno Schneeweiß will report on the doctor Franz Xaver Schwediauer, who was famous in the 18th century but hardly known to anyone today.

Schwediauer was born in Steyr in 1748 as the son of a middle-class miller family. Even as a child he received a high-quality education, which took him to the knight’s academy in the Benedictine monastery in Kremsmünster. In 1766 he began studying medicine at the University of Vienna, which he completed six years later. After three years in Vienna, he moved to London to work as a doctor. In addition to his work as a doctor, he researched the disease syphilis and achieved world fame with a study. Acquaintances with important personalities of his time, including Maria Theresa’s personal physician, Anton de Haen, in Vienna and the royal personal physician John Pringle in London, have been recorded. In 1789 he moved to France, where he died in 1824.

Johannes Seidl, a historian with a doctorate, was deputy until his retirement. Head of the archives at the University of Vienna. Since 2017 he has been deputy. Chairman, from 2019 to 2021 chairman of the historian group of the Society of Physicians in Vienna. The doctor Bruno Schneeweiß, who was born and raised in Steyr, also studied Greek and Latin and supports Seidl with medical-historical questions. He translated Schwediauer’s Latin dissertation.
