Fraudsters exploit health data leaks to defraud

Yesterday the police, prosecutor’s office and data protection inspectorate announced that a large amount of personal health data had been disclosed by the private company Asper Biogene. Fraudsters take advantage of a data leak at a company that has gone public. The person is called and informed that their health information has been leaked, then further questions are asked. The real goal of scammers is to get hold of people’s bank account details and money. In worst cases they can even start extorting money. If anyone receives such a call, he should immediately hang up and contact the police.

According to Jaanus Juhanson, head of the Southern Prefecture’s cyber and economic crime group, we need to be careful, because scammers take advantage of data leaks to act reliably. “People affected by the health data leak are notified via email, and this is done by healthcare professionals who send personal notifications to the people affected by the data leak. Additionally, further information regarding the data leak has been added to the website of health institutions. People are definitely not notified by telephone, as the scammers did,” he added.
