Although the Danish monarchy dates back more than 1,000 years, the role of kings today is limited by the country’s constitution. However, the Danes are immensely proud of their royal family and the monarchs are important representatives of the country.
Birgitte Borup, culture editor of the Danish newspaper Berlingske, told CNN that Frederik is extremely popular among Danes and that public support for the new king is convincing. She added that Queen Margrethe is serving him the monarchy on a silver platter.
Borup explained that Frederik will be a different kind of king, adding that he is down-to-earth and sports-minded, while his mother is more culturally important. He added that Frederik’s main challenge might be his ability to manage words, as he is not known for being much of a talker in front of the public.
From rebellious teenager to king
Frederik André Henrik Christian, born in 1968, is the first child of Margrethe and her husband, Prince Henrik, who died in 2018. His name was chosen according to Danish royal custom, according to which the male heir to the throne call Frederik or Christian.
Growing up in the public eye wasn’t easy for the shy young prince. Frederik felt uncomfortable with the media attention and was worried about his fate. In the early 1990s, many saw him as a “party prince” with a penchant for fast cars.
His time at Aarhus University helped improve his reputation, and in 1995 he became the first male member of the Danish royal family to obtain a master’s degree.
Acclaimed soldier and athlete
Frederik underwent extensive military training in all three Danish military branches. He completed his training in the “Frogman Corps” of the Danish Navy, where he was nicknamed “Pingo” (“Penguin”).
In addition to being a decorated soldier, Frederik has proven to also be a passionate and extremely capable athlete. Over the years he has run several marathons: in Copenhagen, Paris and New York. In 2013, he became the first royal to compete in an Ironman. Frederik finished the race with a time of 10:45:32.
