Gallery: Rehearsals of August Gailit’s “Karge mere” have begun at Rakvere theater | Theater

Last week the troupe of the show “Karge meri” met for the first time in the rehearsal room of the Rakvere theater. Elar Vahter, known primarily as an actor at the Rakvere Theatre, takes on the role of director this time instead.

The events of Gailit’s novel, published in 1938, take viewers to an island isolated from the world, to a community of fishermen and seal hunters. People living in difficult conditions are forced by the sea into a constant struggle for survival, but in this context the inhabitants of the island must also face their dreams, relationships and the unexpected twists of fate.

“Even though it is a novel whose action is completely linked to the sea, for me the words ‘sparkling sea’ rather represent a kind of sensation that you can’t put your hands on,” said director Elar Vahter. “I would translate the word ‘crispy’ as love and the word ‘sea’ as human. It’s about love rock n roll on a small Estonian island, where people with limited minds by the sea seek shelter and warmth in the wind of cold, metallic sounds,” the director told the background of the story.

Starring: Tuuli Maarja Möller, Silja Miks, Madis Mäeorg, Peeter Rästas, Laura Niils, Hans Kristian Õis (as guest).

“Karge meri” will premiere in the small house of Rakvere Teatr on March 15, 2024.
