On the afternoon of the second day of Christmas, the Metsküla tavern was full of people: a big nääsoku was being prepared.

Krista Kallavus, cultural heritage specialist from Matsalu National Park, invited people from Matsalu District to make Christmas socks for the Rodent Customs Family Day.

Before dedicating himself to craftsmanship, Kallavus did a small retrospective on the popular customs of the time. According to him, the winter holidays for the elderly were a longer period: they began already on St. Michael’s Day. “Then it got a little quieter and people started coming into the room from the yard with work,” Kallavus said. According to him, various types of sandi began to circulate, the most familiar of which are mardi-kadri. “There were once ghosts too,” Kallavus added.
