Under the direction of Tiit Palu, rehearsals of Eduard Vilde’s latest play “Side” began at the Vanemuine theater, which was overshadowed by “Tabasamata ime” and “Pisuhänna”.
It is known that Vilde himself considered it the most successful of his three works, as did several critics. Regarding the origin story of “Sideme”, Vilde recalled that his first idea was to write a joke with the initial title “Pärija”, in which a quarreling father and son try to compete with each other to the death, but eventually they realize the futility of their actions and later reconcile happily. A case from Tallinn’s working life offered Vilde a suitable topic, in which a father and son tried to prevail over each other’s business and both ended up bankrupt.
As an added nuance, Vilde intended to poke fun at the stupidity and greed of several Estonian publishers, who she had to deal with a lot when it came to publishing her work. However, the writer’s wife, Linda, convinced the author to see the more serious side of the problem of generations, and instead a drama was completed in which two different views of life collide against the background of contemporary business ethics: the pragmatic and the cynical wolf morality of the old Hans Ilves and the life credo of his son Voldemar Ilves respecting the principles of honest business. Around the two main characters, Vilde has woven several tenser relationship lines involving several colorful secondary characters.
The last time Eduard Vilde’s “Side” was staged at the Ugala Theater was in 1988.
Director Tiit Palu is also the playwright of the show, Jaanus Laagriküll is the artist and Margus Vaigus (Endla) is the lighting designer. The show will be presented to the public by Riho Kütsar, Veiko Porkanen, Maarja Johanna Mägi, Kärt Kull, Reimo Sagor, Ott Sepp, Jüri Lumiste, Andres Mähar and Kaarel Pogga.
“Side” debuts March 30 in the small hall of the Vanemuine theater.
