GUIDE ⟩ Good news for Ukraine from Germany

Ukraine is in a difficult situation militarily. The much-discussed great counteroffensive has probably finally stalled. Instead, Russia is trying to go on the offensive at the front. Russian forces may not have high-end equipment, but they have many other things necessary for warfare, both so-called dumb ammunition and cannon fodder.

What’s even worse is that the aid package for Ukraine is stalled in the US, and risks the same fate in the EU.

In the United States, the Senate failed to pass the aid package for Ukraine and Israel, as Republicans and independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who usually votes with Democrats, voted against it. Not that the major American parties have anything against helping one country or the other: the Republicans are only hoping to push the Democrats to impose immigration restrictions in this way. The only one truly against it is Sanders, who does not want to help Israel if the Netanyahu government does not change its policy. However, domestic political trading at the expense of foreign policy continues.

Even in the EU there is only one opponent, Hungary led by Viktor Orbán. Ukraine hopes to receive 50 billion euros in aid over four years from the Thursday-Friday EU Council meeting and the start of EU accession negotiations. However, Orbán says that perhaps Ukraine should be offered security guarantees instead of accession negotiations. The Supreme Council, however, can only make a decision on this matter unanimously.

The Americans in power with political games and Orbán should realize that the only way to curb Russian aggression is to do it now.

Against the backdrop of all this, the messages from Germany give hope. When a full-scale war broke out in Ukraine, Germany was accused of indecision and procrastination with the help of weapons, but now it seems that at least in the EU’s largest and richest country things have been understood correctly.
