Haapsalu held a Three Kings Day fair | Estonia

Epiphany officially marked the end of the Christmas season. A fair was also held in Haapsalu under the guidance of the city’s cultural center.

Western Christians, as well as Orthodox believers who use the new calendar, celebrate the Epiphany on January 6, marking the official end of the Christmas season. According to tradition, three eastern kings or wise men came to Judea that day to worship the baby Jesus.

In the main Polish cities, a traditional procession was organized where, in addition to the three kings, angels, devils and the king of Judea Herod could also be seen.

German President Frank Walter Steinmeier, however, received three children dressed as kings who sang Christmas carols for him.

Since the Epiphany also coincides with the feast of the baptism of Jesus, believers from different countries, for example in Greece, went to swim in the icy water on this occasion.

Three Kings Day was also celebrated in Estonia. If the country celebrates the beginning of the thematic year of cultural wealth next weekend, in Läänemaa it did so a week earlier: in Haapsalu a winter fair was held at the time in which the Christmas period ends in the Estonian folk calendar and the holidays arrive in the Orthodox Church.

“We saw the opportunity to give other people living in our city with a different culture the opportunity to party. It is known that there are representatives of 45 nationalities in Haapsalu and our immediate surroundings,” explained Gülnar Murumägi, director of the Haapsalu Cultural Center.

Both singers and dancers performed in the historic center of Haapsalu. Despite the biting cold, the performers were in good spirits and, for example, the Läänemaa folk dancers invited the audience to turn their legs during a number.

The Suprjadki folklore complex came to visit from Narva, which deals with the collection, restoration and dissemination of the traditional culture of the border peoples, i.e. Estonians, Russians, Vadjas, Isurs and Setu.

At the same time, there was a good life on Karja Street. Good and better drinks and food were enough for all tastes.

“I came to see what was offered at the fair and we bought a smoked sea bream for Saturday evening. If possible, we eat a lot of fish and sea bream is a great fish to eat at our house,” said Andres, a visitor to the fair . the fair.

The Three Kings Day fair was the first major event of this year’s cultural event season in Haapsalu.
