Heavy snow affected European traffic, including airports

At Frankfurt airport, planes were grounded due to heavy cold rain, German news agency dpa reported. According to the airport, there was a risk that the planes would freeze before reaching the runway. Hundreds of flights were cancelled, but departures resumed in the afternoon as the rain eased.

Additionally, the airport in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, was temporarily closed because snow reduced visibility for pilots. Airport spokeswoman Ylva Celius Trulsen said the heavy snowfall and strong winds that disrupted traffic were “very unusual” and resulting airport closures were rare. The airport reopened later Wednesday.

Snowfall also blocked traffic in other parts of Scandinavia, with roads and highways congested and public transport delayed. Ferry services were also canceled and some bridges were closed. In many parts of Denmark, people have been asked to stay at home.

In western and southern parts of Germany, rain made roads slippery, leading to several traffic accidents, the Associated Press reports. As a precaution, many schools and nurseries have been closed, some companies have offered employees the opportunity to work from home.
