In France, six teenagers have been convicted of aiding and abetting the brutal murder of a teacher

Patyd was stabbed and beheaded on October 16, 2020, allegedly after showing students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad while speaking about free speech.

One of the defendants was a teenager who reportedly told her parents that Paty had asked the Muslim students to leave the room before showing the cartoon, Reuters reports. The girl pleaded guilty in court to false charges and defamatory comments because it was proven that she was not in class when the cartoon was shown.

The other five young people were found guilty of participation in a premeditated criminal conspiracy and of aiding and abetting the ambush.

Paty, 47, was killed outside a school in a Paris suburb by an 18-year-old Chechen attacker killed by police shortly after the attack. The teenagers on trial were accused of drawing the killer’s attention to Paty.

A lawyer for Paty’s sister said his client was “satisfied with the full sentence” but less satisfied with the “overly lenient” sentences. A lawyer representing one of the teenagers said that although it is difficult to speak of satisfaction in such tragic circumstances, her client felt relieved.

The most severe sentence was given to the teenager, who will officially have to serve six months in prison, although he should be able to do so under house arrest under electronic monitoring.

Found guilty of false accusations and defamatory comments, the girl was sentenced to 18 months of probation, plus two years of probation.

The next trial relating to Paty’s murder will take place next year. Then there are adult defendants on trial.
