In North Korea, a monument symbolizing union with South Korea was removed

A report by online publication NK News revealed that a monument symbolizing hopes for Korean reunification was missing from Tuesday’s satellite images.

The 30-meter removed monument is officially known as the Monument of the Three Charters of National Reunification, which symbolized self-reliance, peace and national cooperation.

On January 15, Kim gave a speech to the Supreme People’s Council, where he called the monument a “pile in the eye.” In the same speech, according to Reuters, he ordered the constitution to be amended to name South Korea an “immutable archenemy.”

Tensions between the neighboring countries increased as North Korea declared it was ready for “nuclear war” with its enemies. South Korea and the United States responded to the announcement by intensifying military exercises.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has taken a hard line against North Korea, calling for an immediate and tough response to North Korea’s military activities.

North Korea has vowed to “destroy” the South if attacked by South Korean and US forces. North Korea last year canceled a 2018 agreement with South Korea aimed at easing military tensions.
