In Russia, the conductor threw a cat out of the train, in the 30-degree frost, the animal died

“We are sincerely sorry that the Twix cat died,” the state news agency RŽD said, vowing to change its rules, the BBC reports.

Previously, footage appeared on social media showing an orange and white cat abandoned in the snow in Kirov, east of Moscow, on January 11.

The male cat was known to be mistaken for a stray cat by a train conductor. According to passengers walking in the carriage, they saw the cat escape from the cage.

When the incident came to light, hundreds of volunteers began searching the area of the Kirov railway station. The cat was finally found dead on Saturday, and the pet’s owners later identified it as Twix. According to some reports, Twix died from animal bite and frostbite.

At the same time in Kirov it was cold up to 30 degrees.

More than 70,000 people have signed a petition calling for a criminal investigation into the female carriage operator after local authorities refused to do so. A separate petition, signed by more than 200,000 people, calls for the officer, who has not been publicly identified, to be fired.

One of Twix’s owners told state media that he intends to take the matter to court.

Thousands of people across Russia followed the developments on a specially created social media channel.

When Twix’s death was confirmed, one user posted a painted image of a cat with angel wings and a halo above its head.

The RŽD announced on Saturday that it is already implementing changes that prohibit company workers from letting animals off trains.

Instead, the company added, they will be handed over to train station workers and animal protection associations will be summoned.

RŽD took a defensive position, commenting on social media that the company’s employees treat the animals with great attention and love and take care of them in every possible way during the train journey. They added that the company’s employees were also involved in the Twix search. One of RŽD’s subsidiaries is said to be looking for opportunities to establish long-term ties with organizations that help stray animals.
