Intense weekend for the Italian alpine skier, the men are idle | Alpine skiing

Italian expert Federica Brignone showed great momentum during the women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup stage at the Canadian Ski Center in Tremblant, winning both giant slaloms.

On Saturday, Brignone beat Slovakian Petra Vlhova and American Mikaela Shiffrin to become the oldest giant slalom winner in MK series history at age 33. Sunday postponed the maximum score for another day.

At the same time, Brignone only held sixth position after the first descent on Sunday, but after the second descent the next five climbers could not stay ahead of him.

Brignone (2.11.95) preceded the Swiss Lara Gut-Behram (+0.33) and Shiffrin (+0.39) by two runs. Vlhova, in the lead after the initial descent, settled for fifth place (+0.67) behind the Frenchwoman Clara Direz (+0.45).

The experience came in handy for the Italian race, as the riders had to deal with a good amount of snow. “The second descent was very difficult,” admitted the winner. “I tried to put everything on the line, I knew the conditions were very difficult because we couldn’t see, it was snowing and it was windy.”

“But I usually feel good in these conditions. My brother told me before the second descent that it’s fine, we’ve been training in these conditions for a month.”

If Brignone had set an age-related record the day before, on Sunday she also became the first Italian woman to record 23 stage victories in the MK. So far she has shared first place with Sofia Goggia.

There is currently an unusual situation in the Alpine Skiing World Cup series, as the women already have seven races, but only one for the men. For various reasons, most of the planned undertakings were cancelled.

This past weekend, Beaver Creek was unable to host either the scheduled downhill races or one of the giant slalom races. In America, athletes were disturbed by heavy snow and strong winds.
