INTERVIEW ⟩ Interview by Kaie Metsla with Martin Kivisoo: Moaljapaigad and the new spirituality

“Myths are more real than reality itself,” said American psychologist James Hillman. In the fall of 2021, a Hillman course called “Soul Code” was held at EBS, where his longtime friend, US cultural historian Richard Tarnas, gave a guest lecture. Six months later, in January 2022, we discussed Homer’s “Odyssey” in the “Important Books” course series. This course was called “Forget Ithaca!”. We talked about mythology and the development of the history of Western thought. Martin Kivisoo joined us for these two courses. The addition of him raised the average arithmetic age of the interested parties quite well.

What brought one of Estonia’s largest horse breeders and the founder of Tihus Hobuturismitalu back to school in Muhu? At the time we had no idea. During this interview many things became clear. Our conversation was like peeling an onion, where peeling back the layers finally exposes the powerful kernel. Spiritual power and myths were the themes that united Martin and me. So that our discussion did not remain just theoretical, Muhus Martin and I visited several military sites, took part in rituals and enriched our personal experience.

In 1962 I was on a school trip to Lithuania. In the parking lot of a small town a gypsy came to tell us the future for 30 cents. At that time a loaf of bread cost 14 cents. I tried to take the prediction seriously because my grandfather had appreciated these things. However, to seventeen-year-old me, the gypsy’s prediction seemed nonsensical. I had decided to begin studying philology within a year, which I did, but the gypsy predicted that I would have 300 horses and 300 cows and that I would have to take out a loan within two years to pay my salary. That same evening I asked my classmate, who had helped me translate the story of the gypsy from Russian, what kind of collective farm is this, where I have to take a loan so that the collective farmers receive their wages. A conversation with a classmate helped solidify the prediction in my memory. Later it turned out that he had forgotten about this conversation. The gypsy predicted something else, but I can’t talk about what has not yet come true: this would interfere with the advent of events.
