Ironman, MM jet ski and MK judo: one of the main events of this sports year in Tallinn

Aire Veskimäe, one of the organizers of the Ironman Tallinn and Ironman 70.3 European championships, said that even bigger races with more famous participants will be held in the capital in August. “This time, Ironman Tallinn is also among the 18 competitions of the professional series. It arouses interest even among top competitors who otherwise would not have considered coming to Estonia.”

This time around 4,500 competitors are expected to take part in all competitions. If the coronavirus crisis reduced the number of participants to less than a few thousand, it is now reaching an even higher level than usual. “If even around 100 top-level professional athletes came here, it would be a completely new level for us,” Veskimäe said.

Last year the women’s competition was already at the highest level, this year there will also be a very high level men’s competition. Furthermore, a charity competition is held in support of Ukraine.

Jet skis and judo

Algo Kuus, general secretary of the Veemoto sub-union, emphasized that Estonia also has high expectations for medals at the world championships of Veemoto’s GT-30 and OSY-400 boat classes, which will take place on Lake Harku in July. “At the beginning, the world champion Rene Suuk from Tallinn defends his title, who has to do it among the best in the world, who come with their boats.”

According to Kuus, the competitions held in Tallinn have always been of such a high level that most competitors want to come here with great pleasure. “Since the centenary of aquatic motor sports is underway, the boat classes in which Estonian athletes have been successful in the past were also selected for the Tallinn competitions,” she added.

Registrations for the competitions open as early as March. However, only 18 boats will make it to the final and a tough competition will begin.

Judokas come to Tallinn to host both the European Junior Championships and the adult World Cup stage. President of the sub-association Kaido Kaljulaid emphasized that future potential Olympic champions in the younger age group will also participate in the September competitions.

“The European Junior Championship is one of the strongest competitions in this age group. The strongest in the world generally come from Europe, and therefore very strong competition is expected. Our athletes will also be on the field to show their best results with the support of the home walls. Furthermore, a strong group is growing among the juniors and we are already very excited,” he said.

Around 600 judokas are expected to participate, making it the largest judo competition ever held in Estonia. Last year, judo among adults managed to successfully complete the World Cup stage, and that is why they will come to Tallinn again in July for a new competition. “Maybe soon we will be able to organize a competition for the adult title,” expressed the hope of the judoka leader.

Popular disc golf

Tiit Terik, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, said that this year major traditional competitions, such as the Tallinn Marathon and Ironman, will take place in Tallinn, as well as new areas, the most significant of which are jet skiing and disc golf. “Last year many people attended the disc golf competitions at the Tallinn Song Field, and this time we also expect many spectators and, of course, famous participants. The popularity of this area is increasing.”

This year Tallinn will host and support 95 high-level international sports competitions, including 16 European championships and stages of the World Cup and European Cup. The city supports the organization of international sporting events with a total of 645,000 euros.
