Russia launched a missile attack on Kiev

Russia launched a missile attack on the Kiev region early Monday morning at four local time.

According to the press release of the Ukrainian Air Force, Ukrainian air defense shot down eight Russian missiles aimed at Kiev. According to Ukrainian authorities, all Russian missiles were shot down.

Debris from the downed missiles caused damage in Ukraine’s capital and injuries were also reported.

Ukrainian air defense also shot down 18 Shahed-136 attack drones that took off from the Russian-occupied territory of Crimea.

ISW: Ukraine is making progress on the eastern bank of the Dnieper

According to the ISW think tank, Ukrainian forces continue to conduct operations on the occupied eastern bank of the Dnieper River in the Kherson region.

The Ukrainian General Staff did not provide much new information about what is happening, limiting itself to the announcement that Ukrainian forces maintain their positions on the eastern bank of the Dnieper.

At the same time, Russian war bloggers say that the activity of Ukrainian forces in the region has increased and that Ukrainian units have made some progress.

According to Russian war bloggers, fierce battles continue near the village of Krõnkõ. The village is located 30 kilometers east of the city of Herson.

Russian sources also say that Ukrainian units have expanded their control over Velikyok and Potemkinskiy Islands. According to the ISW, Ukrainian forces control the entire island southwest of the city of Kherson in the Dnieper River. Military activities also take place on other islands in the Dnieper River.

Zelenskyj will visit Washington, meet Biden and Republicans

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington on Tuesday on a working visit to meet with President Joe Biden and congressional Republicans to ensure continued support in the fight against Russian forces.

After the White House announced Zelenskiy’s upcoming visit, an aide to Mike Johnson, the new Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives, said Johnson would also meet the Ukrainian leader on Tuesday.

Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell also invited Zelenski to speak to all senators Tuesday morning, a Senate official said.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that Biden and Zelenskiy will “discuss Ukraine’s urgent needs” and “the vital importance of continued U.S. support at this critical time.”

In turn, the Office of the President of Ukraine noted that the meeting will focus on such topics as “joint projects in the production of armaments and air defense systems, as well as coordination of efforts between our countries in the coming year.”

“Zelensky focuses on ensuring the unity of the United States, Europe and the world by supporting Ukraine to protect it from Russian terrorism and to strengthen the international order based on rules and respect for the sovereignty of each country,” he reported Kiev.

Republican senators last week blocked Biden’s requested $106 billion security package, which mainly included aid to Ukraine and Israel, continuing disputes over U.S. migration policy and border security.

It was a setback for Biden, who had urged Congress to approve the appropriations, warning that the head of the Russian regime, Vladimir Putin, would not stop at victory in Ukraine and might even attack some NATO countries.

The White House noted that Biden’s meeting with Zelensky comes at an important time as Russia is escalating missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Putin also signed a decision to increase the personnel of the Russian Armed Forces by 15 percent, or about 170,000 people.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed on Sunday that “Ukraine has done an extraordinary job” in defending itself.

“Now is really the time to act, because if we don’t, we know what will happen. Putin can move forward with impunity, and we know he won’t stop in Ukraine,” he said.
