“It seemed like it couldn’t happen to our family.” The Christmas holidays at the children’s hospital ended with the child’s harsh diagnosis

On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus was accompanied by a woman from Tallinn Children’s Hospital who took a Polaroid photo as a souvenir. “It was incredibly emotional because we weren’t sure if our son would live to see Christmas or not.”

The day before Christmas, the family had planned to buy gifts, but unexpectedly ended up in the hospital. “We could not suspect anything negative about the state of health of Ernst August, alias Kust. He had blood in his stool a few weeks after birth, but the doctors thought it could have come from milk, because the digestive system of children is not yet developed. The son developed well and there was no reason to worry,” says Grete. Everything started to get worse on Monday, December 19th. “That evening I was returning from the hairdresser and we had a Christmas party at home with the staff of the Te Activity Development and Therapy Centre. Last year was the last moment I felt that everything was going well.”
