It took Djokovic four hours to defeat Fritz | Tennis

World number one Novak Djokovic reached the semi-finals of the men’s singles at the Australian Open by defeating Taylor Fritz (12th ATP) in the top eight.

In the first set, Fritz had two set points to use at 6:5, but was unable to score any of them. Then the set ended with a quick final game in which Djokovic was down 7-3. Fritz started the next set with a break of serve and won 6:4 at the end of the second set.

In the third set Djokovic won the set with a quick counterattack, with the help of which he took a 3-0 lead. In the eighth game the Serbian broke his opponent’s serve for the second time, thus winning the set 6:2. In the fourth set, Djokovic broke Fritz’s serve two more times and won 7:6 (3), 4:6, 6:2, 6:3.

Djokovic served 20 aces to Fritz’s 16. The Serbian’s first serve success rate was 63, while he won 82% of the points played with his first serve and 58% with his second serve. Djokovic achieved a total of 52 service points and 26 unforced errors, while Fritz’s numbers were 63 and 39 respectively.

In the semifinals, Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner (ATP fourth seed) or Andrei Rulbjov (ATP fifth seed).

In the women’s singles, last year’s US Open winner Coco Gauff (WTA 4a) was the first to secure a place in the semifinals, beating Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk (WTA 37a) 7:6 (6), 6:7 ( 3), 6:2 in an even game.

The American, who reached the top four for the first time at the Australian Open, will next meet second-ranked Arina Sabalenka (2nd WTA) or ninth-ranked Barbora Krejcikova (11th WTA).
