Jaanus Teppan: Daisy has the best chance of realizing her potential in sprinting Winter Sports

The World Ski Orienteering Championships will begin on Tuesday in Ramsau, where Estonian athletes are also aiming for top positions. Estonian national team coach Jaanus Teppan gave ERR an overview of the current situation.

Sprints are scheduled for Tuesday and pursuit races for Wednesday. In the first zone, 67 men and 40 women from 18 countries will try to win. The Estonian national team consists of men Kevin Hallop, Mattis Jaama, Sander Pritsik and Andres Room and women Daisy Kudre-Schnyder, Doris Kudre, Keidy Kaasiku, Kaidy Kaasiku, Epp Paalberg and Laura Elisabeth Christel Laan.

“The leader of our team is Daisy Kudre-Schnyder, a four-time world champion, but this year she is busy working harder and the preparation has therefore been inconsistent,” began Teppan. “I hope that the young people, especially the juniors, start to stand out more. We have many interesting and promising young athletes. I can’t suggest places at the moment, maybe after the sprint on Tuesday, then it will be a little clearer what kind of preparation the competitors have done.”

Kudre-Schnyder has previously said that the trails in Ramsau are not suitable for him. What are your prospects of winning a medal? “We can’t really say. It all depends on what the track instructor has prepared. There is always this element of surprise. Tuesday is a sprint race and the track starts from a higher place and ends at the ski stadium. Personally I think that who chooses the right ones quickly will be decisive. Personally I think that perhaps on Tuesday Daisy will have the best chance to realize her potential”, said the team coach.

For the first time, twin sisters Kaidy and Keidy Kaasiku, avid Winter Olympic skiers, will also compete in the ski orienteering title competition. “They took part in the Estonian championship last year, Kaidy came second and Keidy fourth. Besides skiing they also know their way around well. In Ramsau they are in the pre-camp for their main competition, the U-23 World Cup. For them, the ski orienteering World Cup is a great effort, where their thoughts are elsewhere. It’s not driving at full throttle, but you also have to work with your head,” explained the instructor.

What should people who are new to ski orienteering keep in mind? “There are many aspects of this type. In television broadcasts you cannot see everything that happens in the forest. For example, how much snow there is or how the athletes cut. No one can predict this and since there are “There are many choices different, this makes the competition exciting. It’s difficult to predict, but I can say that under the Ramsau forest there is not much snow and the track conditions are quite difficult,” added Teppan.

The Ski Orienteering World Cup can be seen live on ETV2 and on the ERR sports portal. On Tuesday the women’s sprint will start at 12.25pm, the men’s at 1.40pm.
