Jana Toom: I am not an enemy of the state! I already had Estonian nationality in my Soviet passport

In our school, probably in the fifth or sixth grade – when the First World War was studied in the Soviet school history curriculum – it was very clear, and I will remember this all my life, that every war has reasons and reasons. It is known that the First World War began with the killing of Franz Ferdinand, but the real reasons were others.

And now I’m the Franz Ferdinand being used to justify his decisions. I haven’t changed, I’m exactly what I was 5, 10 or 15 years ago. And the whole saga of legal aid (Toom offered legal assistance at his own expense to Kremlin provocateurs expelled from Estonia in 2022 – EH) is old, it was known long before the congress and both Ratas and Karilaid had commented on it already in June. And in this context, you commented that we have a rule of law and that if people seek legal assistance within the framework of the Estonian legal system, that is absolutely fine. That they wouldn’t, but that’s okay.

Don’t you feel guilty about the collapse of the Center Party?
