January weather: colder and colder

The beginning of the month is on the edge of high pressure with the cold arctic to the north, which is put under pressure by a low pressure area from the south. At night the frosts are around -20°C, in the eastern part up to -30°C, the increase in temperature during the day is limited to a few degrees and the feeling of cold is increased by the strong wind from the east and north- East . Light snow is added mainly by clouds reaching the northern coast from the Gulf of Finland. From January 6th the clouds will spread more widely along the low pressure edge, the snow cover will rise a couple of centimeters, and the cold will retreat for a while. In the next few days the cold will be more intense, bordering on a new strengthening of high pressure. In the future the weather will be made unstable by the low pressures arriving in the northwestern flow: there will be both mild temperatures close to 0°C with snowfall and sleet, and occasionally cold temperatures down to minus degrees.

In the middle of the month the weather should get colder again, and around January 20th an invasion of arctic cold cannot be ruled out. At the end of the month low pressure will probably reach the Baltic Sea area together with a softer air mass.
