In the English League Cup series, the four semi-finals were determined when Liverpool beat West Ham United 5-1 at home at Anfield. Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones ended his six-month drought by scoring twice for West Ham.
Liverpool took the lead midway through the first half when Jarell Quansah won the ball in midfield and found Dominik Szoboszlai from just outside the area, whose long-range shot went just wide of the post. In the second half, Jones and Cody Gakpo extended the lead for the hosts: Jones launched the ball into the net from an acute angle following a pass from Darwin Nunez and Gakpo entered from distance after Ibrahima Konate’s forehand.
West Ham pulled one back in the 77th minute when Jarrod Bowen scored after Benjamin Johnson’s long pass, but the visitors could do no more. Instead, Liverpool kicked into fifth gear, adding the fourth and fifth goals.
Mohamed Salah received an excellent pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 82nd minute and converted a one-on-one against Alphonse Areola. Two minutes later, Alexander-Arnold found Jones in midfield, who flicked the ball into West Ham’s penalty area and slotted it firmly past Areola. Meanwhile, both Salah and Alexander-Arnold came on as substitutes in the second half.
Liverpool hero Jones on Sky Sports: “I just want to play, whether it’s the Carabao Cup, the Europa League or the Premier League. I want to score goals and help the team. It’s fine to play well, but I have to score goals. I have too scored two goals and have a big smile on my face!” ”
As well as Liverpool, Chelsea, Fulham and, as the only Premier League club, Middlesbrough have also secured a place in the semi-finals. In the first four, Liverpool and Fulham, Middlesbrough and Chelsea will face each other. The opening matches of the semi-finals will be played on January 8th.
