Then the situation got even worse: twenty soldiers were put on tailcoats on their shoulders, while – as the newspaper “Kaja” writes – they wore military boots along with the tailcoats, which greatly amused the foreign guests. Apparently, the sight was as ridiculous as twenty years later, when the wives of high-ranking Russian military officers walked the streets of the newly occupied Estonian capital, wearing nightgowns that they mistook for lace ball gowns.

The newspaper writes that during the party the house became increasingly cold, so much so that the roast goose served on the plates with the sauerkraut froze.

“Kaja” says that the cause of all this was the boiler workers, who were not given food and two bottles of vodka. The tinkers refused to surrender.

Below the published stories and recollections diverge a bit, but the main point is the same: Tõnisson gave an hour-long speech in the cold basement hall, but the guests smuggled vodka into the banquet hall. The atmosphere changed to fun, no one listened to the head of state anymore, they gathered around the tables, sipped the secret sauce and talked to each other like that.

However, the newspaper Edasi reports: “Asking the owners of the oven, why isn’t it heated? They announced that they too will be on strike and that otherwise they will not start heating until the government gives them food and wine. They tried to win them over with money. In the end, however, wine and food were distributed and the men began to work on the central heating. But because the rooms had been left completely cold, they did not heat up that evening.”
