According to the federal government’s decision, the regulation still has to be passed in the main committee of the National Council. The regulation will then come into force after the following announcement in the Federal Law Gazette.
According to Karner, almost 6.4 million people will be eligible to vote. 61,000 of them are Austrians living abroad and 40,000 to 45,000 are EU citizens. These numbers are finally fixed on the deadline, which is 75 days before the election date. This is March 26th.

The federal government fixed a corresponding proposal from Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP) in the Council of Ministers with a regulation on the election date. Austrian citizens and EU citizens with their main residence are eligible to vote. You also have to be 16 years old by election day at the latest. This time, 20 instead of 19 mandates will be awarded to Austria in the European Parliament.

Various deadlines are based on this date, such as registration in the voter register or collecting declarations of support for parties that want to run and do not sit in the EU Parliament or National Council. The campaign cost limitation also applies from this day.

The EU election will not take place in all member states on June 9th. The Union is allowing an election between June 6th and 9th. Speculation that the EU election in Austria could be combined with the National Council election had recently become quieter. When asked about this, Karner said he would not take part in speculation. The National Council election in the fall is “planned,” said the Interior Minister.
