Jüri Ratas excludes candidacy on the Central Party list of the European Parliament | Estonia

Political parties try to include prominent people on the European Parliament lists who can bring in as many votes as possible. Jüri Ratas has said that he will not run on the joint list with Jana Toomi, i.e. in the center party.

Although the nomination of candidates for the European Parliament elections will not begin until April 10, some political parties are said to have already prepared several drafts of a possible electoral list.

“If there is a surprising name in the list of a political party, it will definitely attract media attention, this party will receive a lot of media coverage and this can be reflected in the rating of this party,” Emor said. research expert Aivar Voog.

What the role of a candidate can be was demonstrated in the 2009 European Parliament elections, when Indrek Tarand garnered over 100,000 votes as an individual candidate, opposing party politics.

According to Voog, it is difficult to repeat such a result, but he does not exclude the success of individual candidates.

“It must be a person who has recently left a political party and has not yet founded a new party. Of course there would be potential people for this position,” Voog said.

Jüri Ratas, a member of parliament from the Center Party, who has said he intends to run in the spring, could present himself as an individual candidate.

“It’s a possibility, but I think in today’s situation it’s not very likely,” he said.

Jüri Ratas rules out a candidacy on the joint list with Jana Toomi of the Center Party and promises to make a decision this month.

“I said that I can’t see a candidacy with common values on the same list as Jana Toomi. I think these values are different on fundamental issues. Nor are there many possibilities – if there is a single candidate or from another political party. It was also said that during this month I will make this decision and I will do it,” Ratas said.

The wheel said on December 29 at the ERR, that MEP Jana Toomi’s behavior in defending pro-Kremlin activists in court damages the image of both the Center Party and Estonia. According to Ratas Toom she should not run in the European Parliament elections on the Center Party list.

The wheel has been associated with both Isamaa and the Social Democrats. The presidents of the political parties remain mum on both Ratas and other names.

“Marina Kaljurand is the number one socialist in these European Parliament elections. And looking at the big picture, we will occupy two seats,” said Lauri Läänemets, president of the Social Democratic Party.

Jüri Ratase is said to be among the top three on the Social Democrats’ list. According to Läänemets it is too early to talk about Ratas’ candidacy.

“Yes, we met at the Riigikogu and talked, but it’s actually too early to talk about it. We don’t know what Ratas is doing,” Läänemets said.

According to Ratas, more than three political parties spoke to him about the European Parliament elections.

Isamaa president Urmas Reinsalu has not confirmed whether Jüri Ratas will be able to run for election in his party.

“I don’t have any information about it. But I definitely think the list will include both old, experienced and new players,” he said. He also did not confirm whether Juhan Parts is a candidate for the European Parliament on Isamaa’s list.

The name of Kersti Kaljulaid, who the parties would like to see on their list, was also mentioned on the sidelines of the Riigikogu. Kaljulaid informed “Aktuales kamera” that she will not run in the European Parliament elections.

The European Parliament elections are in June.
