Kalle Rovanperä missed again! Lauri Markkanen was chosen as Finnish athlete of the year

The Finnish Athlete of the Year was chosen only following a vote by sports journalists. Markkanen, who plays in the NBA, finished first with 126 and 1,988 points. He also became the first basketball player to be selected as Finnish Athlete of the Year. Pole vaulter Wilma Murto placed second with 1,879 points (48 first places), while Kalle Rovanperä, crowned world car rally champion for the second consecutive year, placed third with 1,645 points (29 first places) .

Although the rally is very positive for the Finns, Rovanperä, who became the world champion of car rallying for two consecutive seasons, missed this title (athlete of the year) in both years. Last year, when Olympic ski champion Iivo Niskanen was chosen as the best, the rally driver only achieved fifth place.
