Karel Tilga was elected Athletics Male Athlete of the Year for the first time

At the “Sports Year Stars 2023” gala, multi-sport athlete Karel Tilga was named male athlete of the year.

The 25-year-old Tilga, chosen for the first time as male athlete of the year, placed fourth at the World Athletics Championships with 8681 points, this score would have given him a medal in all previous World Championships. Furthermore, Tilga achieved first place in the overall men’s season in the multi-event tour of the International Association of Athletics Federations – for Tilga, the Multistars decathlon held in Italy (8482 points), the Götzis decathlon (8409 points) and the World Cup decathlon in Budapest were taken into consideration.

“I’ve been sitting for three hours thinking about what I’m going to say when I get here. To be honest, my head is completely blank right now,” Tilga laughed as she began her speech. “I would like to thank all the people who made all this possible. I thank my life partner Nina [Nina Schultz – toim.), kes on minu number üks tugiisik, tänan oma treenerit Jeffi [Jeff Huntoon – toim.]who is the brains of this team.”

“I thank the Estonian athletics fans, who always come to the stadium in incredible numbers. It is very proud to look at this blue sea. I can’t name all the names,” Tilga added.

In addition to Tilga, 400 meter hurdler Rasmus Mägi and biathlete Kristjan Ilves were also nominated based on the voting results.

The male athlete of the year was decided by adding the results of the votes of the public, sports journalists and sports organizations.
