Allar Levandi, Ago Markvardt and Magnar Freimuth, the Estonian duos who came fourth in the team competition at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994, visited the “Ringvaate” studio on Wednesday and reminisced about their sporting careers.
The Estonian trio took fourth place at the Lillehammer Olympic Games 30 years ago, but they told Grete Lõbu that they themselves don’t think much about the result. “A little earlier I asked which of us led the first round,” said Freimuth, who led the first round. “I don’t remember. I discovered it now too. It happens somewhere in the course of being, suddenly sometimes you have to speak.”
Levandi said he is still obsessed with the bronze medal. Markvardt agreed. “We still wanted to get this medal. But like we said, God was Swiss that day and we didn’t do a lot of things,” Markvardt said.
Estonian biathletes were very popular at that time and competed for the hearts of Estonians. Freimuth said he received several letters asking to get acquainted, but Markvardt said he received none. “Maybe I didn’t go to the post office to pick up the letters. Maybe they’re still there,” Markvardt said.
All three said the fun at the Lillehammer Olympics was fantastic, starting with the weather. “Sunshine, minus degrees – just fantastic. The Norwegian public is a big supporter, the conditions were also excellent,” said Markvardt, who was also chosen as Estonia’s best male athlete in the same year.
Additionally, the men spoke about the making of the hit song “Lumi on muinasjutt” and thanked Ollie, who performed his version of it at the “Stars of the Sports Year 2023” gala late last year. The trio said there was actually another hit song.
