Lithuania bans police and military personnel from traveling to Russia, Belarus and China

However, in special cases it is possible to obtain permission to travel to the countries mentioned. This is the case, for example, in the event of the death of a close relative or spouse, when it is necessary to address issues relating to property rights or when travel is necessary to fulfill parental responsibilities.

According to the local Ministry of Defense, the list of countries is based on the assessment of risks and threats to Lithuania’s security.

“The national security strategy states that the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus and the People’s Republic of China pose a threat to the security of Lithuania and its citizens,” the draft reads.

The possible threat of espionage is also mentioned and it is added that the security services of Russia and Belarus could interrogate Lithuanians who have entered the countries in question and organize various provocations against them.

Late last year, the Lithuanian parliament adopted a law banning professional military personnel and security officials from traveling to hostile countries. The task of compiling a list of such countries was left to the government.
