Look! The trailer and poster of Tammsaare’s film “Life and Love” have been released

According to the film’s director Helen Takkin, Tammsaare thoroughly, but covertly, analyzed the dialogue between a man and a woman in the novel “Life and Love”. “There is a tension between the lines and behind the monologues, which arises from the main characters’ desire for love, but also from unequal power relations and generational patterns of behavior.”

The feature film “Life and Love” tells the love story of Irma and Rudolf, but the screenplay interprets the novel in a way that gives the story a modern point of view. “It’s not a typical love movie, but a movie about what love can do to people,” Takkin said.

Maarja Vaino, director of the Tammsaare Museum Literary Center in Tallinn, added that in Tammsaare’s work, love is rather something that the characters often cannot handle. “In the new year it will be 90 years since the publication of the novel “Life and Love”. Although the book was published almost a century ago, when society was different, many problems are still similar today, and man and its nature have remained largely the same.”

According to Vaino, the story at the heart of “Life and Love” can draw a surprising number of parallels to today’s world. “In the anniversary year of the book’s publication, it is very positive that the novel inspired director Helen Takkin and screenwriter Martin Algus to create a new approach to the relationship between Irma and Rudolf,” she added. “There were many similar relationships in Tammsaare’s life too, which did not end with a happy walk into the sunset. As a writer, he also made the most of the complicated side of love. When a truly great love is born between two people , it may even end in collapse or destruction,” said Maarja Vaino.
