The Maritime Accident Commission is also in the process of investigating what exactly went wrong on the Mayview Maersk during the storm Pia in December, which led to 46 shipping containers being thrown into the sea.
The weather has been a challenge, and therefore there have been several breaks in the investigation, says Mærsk, who, however, currently have two special vessels to look for the containers.

Coastal fishermen from Thorupstrand Coastal Fishermen’s Guild have previously expressed fear that the lost containers could mean lost income for the fishermen, writes Ritzau.
Maersk has declared its willingness to cover the costs associated with the clean-up.

The chairman of the Danish Fisheries Association, Svend-Erik Andersen, has described the area in question as “the absolute most important fishing area in Danish waters”.

“We have … initiated an investigation into the incident, so that we minimize the risk that a similar episode may take place in the future. It will be an extensive investigation, and it will therefore take a few months before it is completed,” writes Maersk in an email to Nordjyske.

Two months later, Mærsk has so far only located around half of the lost containers.

The second search vessel is the “Sima”, equipped with sonar and underwater camera to locate containers.
Can the safety of the huge container ships be improved?

Five of the containers drifted ashore on the West Coast in North Jutland, and 19 others have been found at the bottom of the sea.

The fishermen are afraid of coming across containers or wreckage, and this can deter them from taking to the water.
But Maersk still needs to find 22 of the lost containers, i.e. almost half of those that were lost.

Maersk is currently investigating the accident on 22 December, where the giant container ship Mayview Maersk lost 46 shipping containers in the sea about 30 kilometers off Hanstholm in a strong storm.

The two special ships searching for the lost containers are “Cable One”. It is equipped with a magnet to pick up metal.
