Marja-Liisa Plats’ work was selected for the final of the illustration exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Literature

Marja-Liisa Plats from Estonia has reached the final of the 58th illustration exhibition competition of the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair.

A total of 3,520 works by artists from 81 countries or regions around the world were submitted to the competition. The jury selected 346 finalists for the final stage of the competition, one of whom is an Estonian illustrator. The definitive list of artists participating in the exhibition will be announced by the end of January.

Marja-Liisa Plats submitted illustrations from Ville Hytönen’s book “A land called Hampampamm” (2023, Koolibri publishing house) for the competition. The book is about a land called Hampampamm, where a diverse group of creatures of all kinds live. Here they found a home Puutobik, Mutipoeg Marakratt, little companions, a girl named Hiisike and the monstrous Kleebo, hidden in the caves behind the salt pans.

The illustration exhibition of the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair was first held in 1967. Last year, the illustrations of the book “Toru” by Pamela Samel were selected for the illustration exhibition at the Bologna Fair, and in 2022, Estonia was represented at the exhibition of illustrations from Marja-Liisa Plats’ work on Triinu Laane’s book “The Cases of Luukere Juhan”.

The children’s book fair will take place in Italy from 8 to 11 am until April 2024.
