Marriage equality has come into force in Estonia. 12 same-sex couples asked to get married

Veiko Pesur, communications adviser at the Ministry of the Interior, said that as of 1pm on Tuesday, 24 electronic marriage applications had been submitted, including 12 from same-sex couples.

Marriage equality was adopted by the Riigikogu on June 20 in a vote of confidence. 55 members of the Riigikogu voted in favor of adopting the law and 34 against, while Estonia became the first Baltic country to legalize gender-neutral marriage.

In addition to marriage, there is the possibility of stipulating a cohabitation contract. With a cohabitation contract, registered partners are guaranteed the right to intervene in decisions relating to their partner and to receive subsidies and benefits if necessary. Even couples who have signed a cohabitation contract are given the possibility of moving on to marriage in a simplified way.

With marriage and registered partnership, couples have rights and obligations that do not extend to unmarried couples. They are mainly related to receiving benefits, property, housing and lineage. In the event of the death of the registered partner or spouse, for example, it is avoided that in the absence of a will the cohabiting partner is not entitled to the inheritance and all assets automatically go to the partner. family members.

Additionally, spousal or partner assistance is used to establish previously expressed intentions when the spouse or registered partner is unconscious or unable to use their will to make decisions about accepting or refusing medical treatment.
