Marriage proposals were made at the Tallinn Christmas market, but divorce assistance was also requested in Estonia

The market has always been an important meeting place for people to communicate and exchange news. Even today the market has not lost its social importance. For example, at the Tallinn Christmas market, people meet, marriage proposals are made, and sometimes Santa Claus’s help is even needed when getting a divorce.

People don’t just go to the Christmas market to drink glög, but sometimes they also buy more personal things. For example, marriage proposals are made.

“We don’t know all the marriage proposals because many take place here, in front of the fir tree, in private. But in fact on Saturday last week there was a small romantic event and we asked for a hand in the wedding”, he said Marjen Võsujalg, head of partnership relations at the Tallinn Christmas market.

“It was nice locals. The young man had come here before, we agreed, he agreed with Santa Claus, what is his view on this,” explained Maive Nahksepp, director of the Tallinn Christmas market.

“They decided to just come to Santa Claus. They came like this, they read me a poem, I thanked them with candy, and then the boy knelt down and took the box with the rings and then gave a ring, he he put on the girl’s finger and put the other on himself. Please, hand and heart. /…/ And then I took the flowers, I had hidden them here. I took them and handed them to the girl, ” described Santa Sem.

“You could feel the love in the air. The young people were very happy, they came out. And even those who were waiting in line for Santa Claus, they actually understood it right away, so they were welcomed there with a little applause, everyone was very excited. Everyone was happy,” Leathersmith said.

A few years ago, however, a young man who moved to Estonia from abroad organized an even grander proposal.

“The daughter was originally a dancer in a ballet school, and that night none of her friends went around, could not get together, and the girl’s father took her to the Christmas market instead. All relatives were carefully hidden in different end of the Christmas market and flash mob‘, each of them started arriving quietly, and it was all very carefully planned,” Võsujalg said.

Once, however, the expected yes did not arrive. “The daughter was not ready to go to Santa Claus, read a poem at Santa’s house and get some candy, but instead of candy, she received a ring. She was probably scared,” Võsujalg said.

In addition to the marriage proposal, Santa Claus was also given a secret wish that his beloved would propose to him.

“Before the borders were opened, there was a lot, a lot, a lot of immediate. Young women came to recover, especially from Russia. They suffered this custom that Santa Claus has to help,” said Santa Claus Sem.

However, Santa Claus was once asked for help in obtaining a divorce.

“He said so, the man will not give a divorce – help. I usually put my hand on his shoulder and say in Russian that your wish will come true. And that’s it. And he came the next year, he thanked me,” said Santa Christmas.

At the Christmas market you don’t just ask for a hand in marriage, sometimes love is born at work.

“The Christmas market is known to be a very long event, about 40-45 days. And if you still drink coffee here with your neighbor for 45 days in the morning, it may happen that you will do it even after the Christmas market. And that’s what happened. /…/ Five or six couples came here. /…/ (Now) they trade in a house,” Nahksepp said.
