Metropolitan Eugeni appealed the expulsion decision | Estonia

Metropolitan Yevgeny, head of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, has lodged objections to the PPA regarding the refusal to extend his residence permit and wants his temporary residence permit to be extended, the metropolitan’s office announced.

According to the office, Metropolitan Yevgeny, whose civil name is Valeri Reshetnikov, submitted a response to the letter of the Police and Border Guard Council (PPA) regarding the initiation of refusal of extension of temporary residence permit.

Russian citizen Reshetnikov’s temporary residence permit expires on February 6. The PPA announced the non-renewal of his residence permit on January 18.

According to the Office, on January 25, Metropolitan Eugeni sent the PPA his objections regarding the circumstances underlying the refusal and requested an extension of the temporary residence permit.

Estonia decided to refuse the extension of the residence permit, because Rešetnikov supports the attacker in his public activities and speeches and, despite previous warnings, has not changed his behavior, said Indrek Aru, head of the border guard office of PPA Northern Prefecture.

Among other things, representatives of the Interior Ministry spoke to Reshetnikov several times and explained to him that he must give up justifying the Kremlin regime and Russia’s military activities in his public activities and speeches. Despite previous warnings, Rešetnikov did not change his inappropriate behavior in Estonia’s legal and value environment. Therefore, Reshetnikov’s actions pose a threat to the country’s security, the PPA announced.

In the procedure for requesting an extension of the residence permit, among other things, Reshetnikov’s activity as representative of the Moscow Patriarchate in Estonia, his public statements and the effects on internal security were taken into account. The Defense Police Directorate also expressed its assessment of him.

The Council of Churches has asked the Ministry of the Interior to explain to all member churches the background to the decision regarding Metropolitan Eugen.
