Miia Ott: I’m very excited about training right now | Athletics

Among young Estonian athletes, athlete Miia Ott made a big leap in development this year, becoming the best in Europe among young sprinters.

Under the guidance of Maris Mägi in the Lasnamäe athletics hall, 16-year-old Ott increases his sprint speed to shine again with exciting races in the new summer. In this year’s European rankings, Ott is the fastest sprinter in the 100m race for the under-18 age group with 11.53 seconds.

What do you like to do most during training? “The completely normal response would definitely be to run, but definitely the whole complex of training that Maris and I have done is extremely exciting for me,” Ott responded to ERR. “Everything is interesting, new and done from a different perspective. I’m very excited about the current lineup.”

Maris Mägi, who chose to become a coach following in the footsteps of her parents Anne and Taivo Mägi, measures Miia’s racing times with a stopwatch in hand. The longest segments are recorded and the technical performance is immediately reviewed together.

What numbers does the coach want? “According to ability,” said Mägi. “That’s why I want the feedback to be as honest as possible. That’s why we test in the meantime, so that there is information about where we are with ours, so that we can look back and why we are there with ours.”

In the summer, Miia Ott won gold in the 100 meters and bronze in the 200 meters at the European Youth Olympic Festival, took sixth place in the 100 meters at the U-20 European Championships and set several Estonian records consecutive years in the age group. .

“On the one hand, Miia is very mature, she knows how to analyze well, she has an excellent feeling, she thinks well both before and after racing”, praised the instructor. “On the other hand, we must take into account the fact that you are still a young athlete, that there should be a lot of moderation and that your typical emotions should also be present during training.”

Also do strength training. How much weight does Miia lift? “In terms of difficulty they are not that great. Rather, the variety of the exercises and their direction is important,” said Mägi.

Miia Ott said she does three or four exercises a week. “For me it’s a reasonable amount to do, I can also do all the school stuff so that I don’t feel like I have a lot of training, a lot of school. I’ve managed to find a good balance between them,” the sprinter explained.

He studies in the tenth year of the Jüri high school. The young athlete, who at the beginning of his sporting career also played football and volleyball and developed a versatile background in athletics with Urmas Põldre, this year started working with Maris Mägi, holder of the Estonian 400 meters record in obstacles, to be able to make greater progress in the sprint.

“The goal is to improve training,” said Ott. “Already with Maris I wanted different training, to specialize more in sprinting. That’s what I achieved here too. The current goal is to stabilize the times from last season, and it’s easier to move on from there.”

Next year her goal is to shine in the youth championships and aspire to the European Championships in Rome in June with the Estonian women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team.
