Milei continues with reforms in Argentina despite protests | foreign country

Thousands of Argentines once again took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Wednesday to protest President Javier Milei’s sweeping economic reform and deregulation decree. Milei sent another large-scale reform bill to Congress on Wednesday.

The protesters, who marched at the instigation of unions, called for the courts to intervene to invalidate the so-called giant regulation, which they say would eliminate worker and consumer protections.

This week Congress met in special session at the request of Milei, in office since December 10, to review the plan.

On Wednesday, the president sent parliament a package of proposals to enforce his decree.

Argentina’s Congress will hold a special session next week to discuss President Javier Milei’s controversial economic reform package.

The sit-in comes after a week of ongoing protests by trade unions and left-wing organisations.

The focus of Congress is President Miley’s massive executive order, which will change or repeal more than 350 economic regulations, including those on rent and workers’ rights.

“The goal is to start the process of rebuilding the country and begin to cancel the enormous amount of regulations that have slowed down and hindered economic growth,” Milei said in a speech from the presidential palace broadcast on television and radio.

Latin America’s third-largest economy is on its knees after decades of debt and fiscal mismanagement, with inflation exceeding 160% annually and 40% of Argentines living in poverty.

Milei, elected last month and taking office 10 days ago, has promised to curb inflation but warned that economic shock therapy is the only solution and that the situation will get worse before it gets better.

After his speech, thousands of people gathered in the streets near the congress to express their discontent.
