There is a lot of talk both about food waste and about those who need it. What’s new for you in this area?
We were very good on both topics. 10 years ago, Rimi Estonia started cooperation with Toidupang, which today has become a standard practice for all retail chains.
To reduce food waste, last year we introduced a new digital solution that helps employees mark products that are about to expire with a discount label. The digital list is updated every morning and employees no longer have to rummage through the shelves and check the goods one by one. This solution reduced our food losses in half in 2023 compared to 2022! And, of course, I’m glad that customers are also shedding false shame and are ready to buy foods with today’s date marked with a discount sticker. Let’s say this is tasty and high-quality food, it’s just that its shelf life is coming to an end.
What advice do you give consumers: how to make thoughtful purchases?
It’s smart to go to the store with a well-thought-out shopping list, whether it’s physically on paper, in an app on your smart device, or just in your head. Adhering to this will help you save time and avoid spontaneous expenses.
It is definitely worth stopping at the ends of the shelf, in front of the baskets or specially shaped shelves, because there, as a rule, the lowest priced products are displayed. Since many shops have introduced electronic price tags, it is no longer so easy to find colorful bargains – that’s why there are separate places for campaign offers. As a consumer, it is worth trusting special displays to find a good price.
If possible, prefer foods with a discount sticker when you are about to cook them, because they cost less and help reduce expenses.
And get more discounted products, because then maybe you won’t have to go to the store as often and you can save time and, for example, fuel, if you shop with a vehicle. Do you still need to pick up a bottle of water or a pack of pasta and rice every day?
Purchases in the e-store are also regulated, as all purchases are immediately visible with the final amount. And of course Rimi customer card holders have an interesting system, the more you buy, the more you save. In addition, there is an opportunity to collect Rimi money.
Additionally, I encourage people to indulge in, for example, Rimi’s fresh sweets or fruit, baked locally!
