More points with a fifth place than with a podium! What curiosities would the new points system have offered in this year’s WRC season?

The FIA recently came up with a new points system which received a lot of negative feedback. In the rally, on Saturday evening of the new year, important points are awarded: 18 for first, 15 for second, and from then on 13, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1. However, these points are received when the driver reaches the finish line even on Sunday.

Another clock will start on Sunday and extra points will be distributed to the seven fastest times of the day: seven for first, one point for seventh. But that’s not all, because as usual there is also a points test, where the best five get points, five to one.

To better understand the points system, Delfi decided to review how the 2023 season would go under the new rules. ATTENTION! The hypothetical calculation cannot be taken as pure truth, because Sunday has a completely different meaning than the New Year. If driver Of course, this has left a clear mark on the balance of power on Sunday race days so far. On the last day of the new year there are already more punks in the game. However, the calculation shows what kind of differences there can be between the final position of the rally and the actual point gain.

It must be said that the official winner of the rally will continue to be decided as the one who is fastest over the three days, as has been the case so far. However, this no longer guarantees that the winner of the trade gets the most points. As the calculations show, this curiosity would have been revealed already at the season opener in Monte Carlo this year.

What’s up, let’s get started.
