Lääne Elu will publish the most read stories again in 2023. One of them is the story “The men of Vorms saved those in the Voos Gorge”, published on August 18.
Last Thursday, August 10, at 10.50am, the emergency service received a call from a man who was spinning fishing in the port of Norrby, who had seen how a boat had capsized about half a kilometer from the coast and two men who had been thrown into the sea needed help.
The men who were spinning fishing in the harbor suddenly heard someone calling for help. Since the sea was windy, the roars could hardly be heard and the sea could not be seen with the naked eye. One of the fishermen brought binoculars from the car and then two people could be seen in the water about 500 meters from the port.
The fisherman who noticed the danger at sea reported the incident to the emergency number 112 and also called his acquaintance Jonne Berggren, owner of the motorboat Bella in the port. The sea swell was at its limit for his boat, the south-east wind at that moment had risen to 8-10 meters per second.
Berggren also took Tiit Veenurme with him when he set sail from the port. When they reached the victims, they managed to drag the frozen and terrified men to their boat. The overturned boat was also dragged to the tow. At 11.24am Berggren reached Norrby beach in his boat. One of the victims, a 74-year-old man, was so scared and tired that she couldn’t say a word. Once on shore, the rescuers gave the man a long push before he regained his life.
The emergency center alerted both the volunteer maritime rescuers from Vorms and Haapsalu, and a rescue helicopter also arrived on site. But before rescuers arrived, the victims were already on the shore.
According to the needy people, who started their journey by boat from Cape Ramsi, it was the last moment to ask for help, because men’s jackets were running out.
“It was very fortunate that the people on the shore heard the cries for help and that the victims were wearing life jackets. Jonne Berggren’s quick action saved the lives of two men that day,” Elu told Lääne on Vorms rescue chief, Kaido Valm.
