Museum of Railways and Communications develops train exhibition | museums

The Haapsalu Museum of Railways and Communications plans to restore the motor train built in 1956, which is part of the museum’s collection, and also to acquire a couple of smaller bone-powered trains, which in the future visitors will be able to ride in Haapsalu railway station.

The Museum of Railways and Communications plans to develop its own railway exhibition. This is possible thanks to the Estonian-Latvian Interreg programme.

Talis Vare, director of the Museum of Railways and Communications, said that the total amount of the project amounts to around 100,000 euros, of which 20% will be contributed by the museum.

“In the years 2024-2025, we plan to repair our motorized train, which was built in 1956, and arrange it in such a way that people can walk 200 meters to the warehouse and back, listen to stories about the trains, get information. Furthermore, we plan to buy a manual train and a bicycle train, which looks like a bicycle that can be ridden along the railway,” Vare said.

A velodressin is already on display in the internal exhibition of the museum, but this model will not be taken out, but another one will be found. But probably the most challenging part of the project is the repair of the motor train, which currently sits in poor condition on the square in front of the Haapsalu train station. Once upon a time this seasoning was used for railway maintenance.

“He was used to checking the condition of the railway, doing some kind of repairs, transporting personnel, transporting materials where repairs needed to be done. It was built for that and at one time he worked in the Tartu region, and he came to the our museum in 2017,” Vare said.

According to Talis Vare, the museum wants to find a way for visitors with special needs to participate in the chest of drawers attraction.
