Local police have recently received several reports of suspicious acts with greyhounds on the hunting circuit. In this context, the help of citizens was requested. Concretely, they are asked to remain attentive to suspicious situations of illegal hunting with greyhounds in meadows, polders, rural areas and forests. Vehicles with English number plates may be involved.

“The investigation has been underway for some time,” assures corps chief Philip Caestecker. “It is suspicious that several bodies washed up in such a short time and we want to do everything we can to solve this case.”
Each time these were young animals which did not have a microchip. The dogs appear to belong to the same breed, but the state of decomposition of the bodies did not make it possible to determine this precisely.

Between November and the end of December 2023, five dog corpses washed up in Ostend. Another corpse was found on the beach in Nieuwpoort-Bad on December 17 and a walker also allegedly threw the corpse of a similar dog into a trash bin in Oostduinkerke after discovering it on a beach. The trash can was then emptied and the dog’s body could not be recovered. “But the description of the body corresponds to that of previous findings,” the local police spokesperson indicated in December.
