At least that’s what scientists think. The cosmic thread is one of the most extreme phenomena that theorists have ever come up with. “This is one of the most likely and testable predictions when viewed across unified theories,” said Neil Turok, a physicist at the University of Edinburgh in Britain, referring to theories that attempt to describe how the fundamental forces of nature coalesced and then divergent in the early universe.
We have not yet found any clear evidence of the existence of cosmic threads. However, over the past year, astronomers have spotted a number of anomalies – from inexplicably large galaxies to oddly shaped clusters – that suggest we may be very close to these enigmatic threads after all. Furthermore, if either of these hypotheses were true, we now have the means to definitively confirm the existence of cosmic threads and even distinguish their various forms.
