Rep. Donald Payne Jr. Remembered
Rep. Donald Payne Jr. passed away on Wednesday, as confirmed by Gov. Phil Murphy. He had been hospitalized since April 6 due to complications from a heart attack caused by diabetes.
Originally from Newark, Payne was elected to represent New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District in 2012, following in his father’s footsteps. Prior to his congressional tenure, he served on the Newark City Council and as a freeholder in Essex County.
At 65 years old, Payne was under medical care and in stable condition, according to a statement released by his office on April 17.
Governor Murphy expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Payne’s dedication to the people of New Jersey and his impactful work in the community.

The writer and resistance fighter Anton de Kom is commemorated in the Loenen National Cemetery. The commemoration marked the 79th anniversary of the death of the Surinamese activist. It was the first time the meeting had been held.
The commemoration is a citizens’ initiative and was created in collaboration with the municipality of Apeldoorn. The mayor of that city, Ton Heerts, gave a speech. President Linda Nooitmeer of the National Institute for the History of Slavery and Cultural Heritage (NiNsee) also addressed those present. Later, wreaths were placed on De Kom’s grave in the National Field of Honour.
“It’s very important to commemorate him. He’s a hero for all of us. Black or white, for everyone,” Nooitmeer says. “We must let these kinds of heroes live on. Because their legacy carries us forward in the battle we are currently fighting against each other for equality.”
Exiled and betrayed
De Kom grew up as a descendant of slaves. At the age of 21 he left for the Netherlands, where, in addition to his work as a representative, he became politically active, including in the Indonesian independence movement and black consciousness movements.
When he returned to Suriname in 1932, his activism quickly attracted the attention of the colonial authorities in Paramaribo. De Kom was subsequently exiled from his native country without trial.
