Latvia should review taxes to reduce shadow economy / art
The OECD recommendations are divided into four parts.
- On fiscal policy. The two big conclusions are to reduce the deficit and try to make spending more efficient. Public debt has become high in recent years and, according to the OECD, indebtedness should be reduced. Regarding spending efficiency, the organization explains that in Latvia there are several possibilities simply to use existing funds more efficiently.
- Speaking of taxes. The OECD recommends reviewing the tax burden on the labor of low-wage workers to try to get these workers out of the shadow economy, which is still at a very high level in Latvia. Experts recommend increasing the property tax by updating it based on market values. However, tax breaks should be provided for the poorest families.
