Gorka Ibarguren and Arkano’s dedication to their Basque partners in Survivors: “Gora Euskal Herria”
Friday, April 26, 2024, 11:14
Gorka Ibarguren and Arkano starred in an exciting duel in Survivors. Both had to face each other on the infernal Ferris wheel, a demanding test in which they had to hold on as tightly as possible to various wooden supports to avoid falling into the water. After a “titanic effort”, in the words of presenter Laura Madrueño, Gorka Ibarguren took the victory but Arkano went further and demonstrated how good he was at losing and his great understanding with a message to both of their partners. «We want to dedicate it to our two girlfriends, who are Basque, Alazne and Andrea. In the city of Geneva, thirteen parking lots and 1,400 square meters of asphalt were removed on Place du Pré-l’Evêque, in the Eaux-Vives neighborhood. Inaugurated on Saturday morning, the new pedestrian and green space should become an island of freshness in a very mineral area.
As part of this redevelopment of the southern end of the square, eight new trees – American locusts – join the 20 trees already present. More than 200 shrubs were also planted along three sides of the space. The tar was replaced by Jura limestone, a permeable material that allows better infiltration of rainwater and whose light color does not retain heat.
For the City of Geneva, this site will constitute an island of freshness, biodiversity and encounters. New benches have been installed and once the shrubs have grown they will isolate spectators from the surrounding traffic. This sector is p

Has the Truth Commission reconciled South Africa? – DW – April 27, 2024
They wait tirelessly on Constitution Hill above the center of Johannesburg. Their singing echoes across the grounds of the old prison and former military fort. The country’s modern Constitutional Court is also located there, partly built from the bricks of a demolished prison block.
The group of older people have been occupying this symbolic place for five months as a place for their protest and as a place to sleep – in their fight for justice: they are victims of the violent acts of the apartheid regime. But did not benefit from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings 28 years ago.
Abandoned
Thabo Shabangu was shot in the back by police officers during a demonstration against the oppression of the majority black population by the white regime in 1990, he said in an interview with DW. “I’m disappointed. We are the revolutionaries from back then, we formed this government and fought for it,” says Shabangu.

The South African government is not there for the people. He feels abandoned and demands financial compensation for the suffering he suffered in the anti-apartheid struggle, but also for medical and social support. This assistance was recommended by the Commission for Recognized Victims. Shabangu – like around a third of South Africans – is unemployed and money for feeding the family and schooling is scarce.
“We believed that the commission would bring us justice,” he complains. But none of the members of the Khulumani Support Group for victims and survivors of serious human rights violations, who are seeking recognition with its sister organization Galela, feel reconciled.

Mandatory registration of living wage earners with VDAB
From May 1, people with a living wage are obliged to register with the employment service VDAB. Of all people with a living wage, barely a fifth are working after a year, but if living wage earners were to register with the VDAB, this would increase to 40 percent. Within the ambition to increase the employment rate in Flanders to 80 percent, the Flemish government recently decided to impose this obligation on living wage earners.
The intention is to work closely with the OCMWs. According to Minister of Work Jo Brouns (CD&V), the OCMW remains “in charge of the file of the living wage recipient”. As soon as the person concerned is registered with the VDAB, the OCMW will be able to determine whether it will provide guidance to work itself or whether it will call on the VDAB for this. The mandatory registration will give VDAB a clear view of all living wage recipients who can take steps towards work.
Anyone of working age who already receives a living wage will have three months to register. Anyone who has applied for a living wage will be given four months to register after the OCMW’s decision on the grant.

Violence: The Hand Signals, Signals and Codes Every Woman Should Know
Violence is part of everyday life for many women. Not just violence within your own four walls, which can manifest itself in many forms, but also sexual violence, especially on lively evenings in bars. Far too often women are harassed, threatened and attacked by men. “Violence against women must finally end,” says Petra Geisecker. She is currently in her fourth semester attending the Braunau trade union school and wants to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women with her project group.
On Friday evening, April 26th, the project group will provide information about emergency signals in the Herzog discotheque under the motto “Stop violence”. There are internationally known signals that women can give in emergency situations, especially during local visits, so that they can receive help. “It is important that all women who are affected by violence or feel harassed know these signals, but of course also everyone else who should recognize these signals and can then intervene,” says Geisecker (more about this below).
Learn self-defense
The project group also organizes self-defense courses for women and girls. “This is not about karate training, but about how a woman can free herself from dangerous situations and how women can de-escalate critical situations,” says Geisecker.
