Birth and upbringing
Al-Attar was born in the Syrian capital, Damascus, in 1927, into an ancient family with a long tradition in Sharia science – whose grandfathers were Shafi’i imams – who worked in the sciences of hadith and were known for their social weight.

Al-Attar studied his first years of education at the Equipment School near Al-Manshiya, then he joined the Arab Institute, where he learned the Islamic religion, history, literature, and philosophy, and he received education from some private schools in Damascus as well.
Al-Attar once attended a lesson at the Arab Islamic Institute in 1954. Al-Tantawi was invited to the institute to give a lesson to the students of the upper classes and professors at the institute, and Al-Attar was among the attendees.
When it was time for questions after the end of the lesson, Al-Attar spoke and commented on Al-Tantawi’s words and disagreed with him on some of his opinions. Al-Tantawi stopped him from speaking and stood up from his seat. Then he asked Al-Attar to sit in his place, but he was ashamed and refused. Al-Tantawi swore to sit, and he responded by saying: “You are more entitled to receive the prayer from you.” ..By God, I do not know how they could bring someone like me, when they have this literary scholar.”
