Next year, weekdays will also be public holidays Estonia

If this year both the Christmas and New Year holidays are spread over weekends and working days, next year the Christmas holidays will fall at more favorable times for employees, namely Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Next year Christmas Eve, or December 24th, will be a Tuesday. Spring Break, or May 1, is Wednesday. Monday is midsummer and Tuesday is Independence Day.

All employees working on national holidays, including those whose scheduled working day falls on a national public holiday, must be paid double pay under Section 45(2) of the Employment Contracts Act. By agreement with the employee, work on public holidays can also be compensated with paid holidays.

According to Article 53 of the Employment Contracts Law, the employer must reduce the working day by three hours before the New Year, the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, Victory Day and Christmas Eve. If the employee’s working day falls on a Saturday or Sunday and it is a day specified in section 53 that is to be shortened, the Saturday or Sunday day must also be shortened.

The reduction of the working day is mandatory for the employer both in the case of normal working hours and cumulative working hours.
